The basics
What is Luma Life?
Luma is a voice-based AI companion for people living with dementia and their family members. As an avatar in an app, Luma supports everyday life – for example with reminders for appointments, meals and medication, personal conversations and brain games. Family members have their own access.
Who is Luma for?
For people living with dementia, families and caregivers. Each group has its own view and its own features.
Which devices does Luma run on?
Luma runs on iPhone and Android smartphones (e.g. Samsung, Xiaomi, Google Pixel) as well as on tablets and smartwatches. The app is free in the App Store and Google Play. Luma will soon also be available via the regular telephone network.
Does my relative need to be good with technology?
No. Luma calls on the smartphone and speaks naturally. Picking up and talking is enough.
Does Luma replace medical treatment or care?
No. Luma is a companion for everyday life and replaces neither medical treatment nor professional care.
Is there scientific support?
Yes. A pilot study is running together with the Institute for Ageing Research (IAF) at OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, bringing current scientific findings into the app. We are also supported by an interdisciplinary expert advisory board from medicine, care, research and data protection.
Will Luma become a digital care application (DiPA)?
That is our goal: we want to become the first digital care application (DiPA). A DiPA is about care benefit rather than medical or clinical benefit, and that benefit has to be proven in a study. Strict regulatory requirements apply, but a DiPA does not have to be a CE-marked medical device. Until then, Luma is an everyday companion that supports families and care.
Getting started
How do I get started with Luma?
Download the app for free and sign up. Luma introduces herself and you can try everything right away. Then you bring your relative on board: Luma comes to their phone too, gets to know them in a conversation, and you link your accounts. Setup only takes a few minutes.
Does my relative have to start first?
No. Anyone can begin: you can set up and try Luma on your own phone first. Later your relative installs Luma on their phone and you link your accounts. Everyone has their own access and their own view.
What happens in the getting-to-know conversation?
After registration, Luma starts with a short conversation held entirely by voice. This helps Luma get to know the person better, for example preferences, hobbies and daily rhythm. Family members can join the conversation or add to it through their own access.
What can family members do in the app?
Through their own access, family members get insights into the day, can set routines, appointments and reminders (by voice or in the calendar), tell Luma about preferences and interests, and are notified of important changes.
